Canada's agriculture and agri-food industry generates around $150 billion, which amounts to around 7% of the country's entire GDP.

With such a huge impact on the economy, it is no surprise that the Government of Canada and other funding entities offer a range of grants and funding opportunities to support farmers, agri-businesses, and related industries.

Whether you're looking to expand your farm, invest in sustainable practices, or launch an agri-tech innovation, there are programs tailored to help.

In this article, we’ve compiled some of the top agricultural grants and funding options in Canada for 2025.

AgriInnovate Program

The AgriInnovate Program is designed to drive innovation in the agricultural and agri-food sectors. This program promotes the commercialization, demonstration, and adoption of commercial-ready technologies that boost competitiveness and sustainability in the industry.

Amount: Repayable contributions of up to $5,000,000 to cover 50% of the cost of the project.

Eligibility: Your organization must be a for-profit business incorporated in Canada and legally able to enter binding agreements. Your activities should focus on one or more of the following:

  • Commercializing innovative agricultural, agri-food, or agri-based technologies or processes.
  • Demonstrating ready-to-commercialize innovations that have completed all necessary testing and piloting.

Agricultural Clean Technology Program

The Agricultural Clean Technology Program is part of the Government of Canada's initiative to support the transition to a low-carbon economy and foster sustainable growth in Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector.

Amount: Up to $2,000,000 per project, which may be:

  • Non-repayable for research, development and demonstration activities; and
  • Repayable where activities involve commercialization and scale-up.

Eligibility: Your organization must either be a:

  • For-profit organization, including agri-food processors;
  • Not-for-profit organizations, including co-operatives; and
  • Indigenous group.

Supply Management Processing Investment Fund

The Supply Management Processing Investment Fund aims to mitigate the impact of international trade agreements on dairy, poultry, and egg processing sectors. The program can be used to support the purchase of new automated equipment and technology.

Amount:

  • $10,000,000 for dairy processors
  • $5,000,000 for poultry primary processors, poultry further processors, hatcheries, egg graders, and egg processors.

Eligibility: Your business must meet the following criteria:

  • Operate within Canada.
  • Act as processors purchasing domestic raw commodities.
  • Primarily process supply-managed commodities at the project location.
  • Hold a valid federal or provincial processing license.
  • Submit financial statements demonstrating at least 24 months of consistent revenue from processing activities before applying.
  • Be federally or provincially registered legal entities capable of entering into binding agreements.

AgriScience Program

The AgriScience Program offers non-repayable funding to support pre-commercial scientific research and activities aimed at advancing innovation in Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector.

Amount: Up to $5,000,000 to cover 50% of the project costs.

Eligibility: To be eligible, your organization must be either a for-profit or not-for-profit entity. You must consent to sharing a summary of your proposal with federal departments as well as provincial and territorial governments. Additionally, your organization must be a legally registered entity capable of entering into binding agreements.

Provincial Agricultural Grants in 2025

Aside from the available federal grants, several provinces and territories in Canada also offer agricultural grants exclusively for farms, businesses, and other agricultural entities within the province or territory.

These grants are designed to address the unique challenges of farms and businesses in the province/territory and provide targeted support.

Below are some of the key provincial agricultural grants in 2025:

Honey Bee Health Initiative (Ontario)

The Honey Bee Health Initiative is dedicated to improving the sustainability of Ontario’s beekeeping industry by supporting beekeepers in maintaining healthy honey bee colonies, ensuring long-term hive productivity and stability.

Amount: Up to $25,000 or 50% of the eligible costs.

Eligibility: The program is open to commercial and hobbyist beekeepers. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have 10 or more colonies registered with the Provincial Apiarist for the current beekeeping season.
  • Have completed a recognized pest management course for honey bees in Ontario within the past two years, or have obtained a diploma/degree in beekeeping from a recognized institution in the last five years.
  • Be fully compliant with all legal requirements, including the Bees Act and Regulation 57, for the current and previous beekeeping seasons.

Buy BC Partnership Program (British Columbia)

The Buy BC Partnership Program offers up to $2 million in annual cost-shared funding to local producers, processors, and associations. This funding supports local marketing efforts aimed at increasing consumer awareness and driving sales of local agriculture, food, and beverage products in British Columbia.

Amount: Non-repayable funding of up to $30,000 per year for applicants with an annual gross revenue over $250,000 and $15,000 per year for applicants with an annual gross revenue less than $250,000.

Eligibility: To be eligible for cost-shared funding through the Buy BC Partnership Program, organizations must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a primary agriculture and/or seafood producer, cooperative, agriculture/food/beverage/seafood processor, or industry association (board or council).
  • Self-fund a minimum percentage of the project budget.
  • Have a head office in B.C. or be authorized to do business in B.C.
  • For producers, processors, and cooperatives, have at least $30,000 in annual revenue for the past two years.
  • Hold a valid Buy BC logo licence.

Enabling Agricultural Research and Innovation (New Brunswick)

The Enabling Agricultural Research and Innovation Program supports the growth, profitability, sustainability, and self-sufficiency of New Brunswick's agriculture, agri-food, agri-product, and agri-science industries. 

This program funds innovative research and development projects, on-farm demonstration trials, pre-commercialization development activities, on-farm innovation, and the adoption of new technologies. It focuses on initiatives with a local impact or those that aid in climate change adaptation or mitigation.

Amount:

  • Up to $60,000 for research and development 
  • Up to $60,000 for accelerating agricultural innovation
  • Up to $30,000 for technology development and demonstration

Eligibility: Indigenous People or Organizations, agriculture producers (individuals or groups), agriculture producer associations, agri-businesses, academic or research institutions, and other individuals or groups capable of meeting program goals are all encouraged to apply.
